The code for the comment system here in the template wasn't updated correctly for the latest version of Wordpress so I had to totally redo it for this theme. Other than that I didn't have the same problem as before. This time I disabled all the plugins and switched to this theme first. Then ran the upgrade and activated the plugins one by one.
