Just for the record, I've been using WP-SpamFree for some time with no issues whatsoever. Combined with Akismet it's a great timesaver, hardly any spam gets through (and legit comments are not blocked). Thanks for a great free plugin Scott.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I was going to try this plugin. My site gets 1 legit comment per week and 50-80 spam comments per day. Manually editing them is very tiresome even if Askimet filters them.

I tried Bad behavior which worked great for preventing spam. too bad it also blocked search engine bots. I also tried Hashcash for about five minutes before disabling it--it added like 10 seconds to my page load time.

I'll check out NoSpamX as you suggest.

Hi Steve,

I have to agree 100% with you that WP Spam Free is a "Pain in the ***". I like to place comments on sites where I have an interest in their topic...normal I think, but everytime I come across WP Spam Free plugin it comes up with that really stupid phrase "seems a bit spammy".

Now as I am not a spammer, I would like to shove "seems a bit spammy" right up the creator´s "where the sun don´t shine" anti spam passage!!

And finally, for all it's worth, Scott, your comments to Steve "seem a bit spammy to me"!!!!

Sorry thought it was the NoSpamNX plug-in that brought up the message. From your above description of the plug-in, it seems the plug-in only works against spam comments left by BOTS. There might not be any protection against spam comments left by HUMANS.

Anyway, anti-spam plug-ins are still trying to device better methods of catching human spam comments.

NoSpamNX doesn't give a message like that...
If anything, it was the Akismet plugin that did it.
NoSpamnNX does nothing but add 2 fields, that are hidden to the user via CSS. If anything is "typed" in those 2 fields the post is automatically marked as spam because bots just fill in all fields. So like I said, it wasn't NoSpamNX that did it. Also, my original blog post was nearly a year ago. I wouldn't be surprised if by now some of the bugs have been worked out.
I will give your blog post a read a little later.

Surprisingly enough I just got the <b>Your comment looks like spam</b> message right after I submitted the comment above. I used the back button, waited for the page to load completely then tried resubmitting it again and it went through. ;)

So I'm guessing that even NoSpamNX isn't foolproof either ;)

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I ran a 7 day test on the plug-in and have written a blog post about my experience. Kinda like a review.

I left a trackback. Hope you don't mind? Do have a fabulous week.

Does anyone else remember using Dr. Dave's SpamKarma? It was the hands down BEST spam killing plugin. Why do these talented developers insist on reinventing the wheel (and a shoddy one at that)? Why not put aside hubris and recognize that SpamKarma's approach to filtering spam was superb and just take the existing code and bring it up to current standards? Or does that make too much sense?
